NAFI Certification Levels
Membership cards designate certification level.
Lead Instructor
Accredited as NCLI
(National Association of Firearm Instructors
Certified Lead Instructor)
1. Successfully completed NAFI Instructor Course or:
2. Successfully completed a Firearm Instructor Training
Course provided by the NRA or another certification
agency and:
a. Read the NAFI Instructors Course and return the certification application agreeing
to abide by the NAFI Code of Conduct.
b. Have a minimum of 2 years shooting the firearm for which you are applying for
certification.
c. Not barred from owning a firearm by Federal or State Law.
d. A Professional Reference Letters attesting to your character and commitment
to quality firearm instruction.
Expert Instructor
Accredited as NCEI
(National Association of Firearm Instructors
Expert Instructor)
1. Must be a NAFI Lead Instructor for a minimum of 3 years and
have taught a minimum of 10 classes or 500 students.
(Or the equivalent in number two above.)
2. Successfully completed NAFI Expert Instructor
Self Study Course and Exam
a. If Applicable, instructors approved by another agency can have any requirement,
except the agreement to abide by the NAFI Code of Conduct, and the ability to own a
firearm, waived upon application to NAFI Executive Director or board member.
b. Two Professional Reference Letters attesting to your character and commitment to
quality firearm instruction.
Distinguished Instructor
Accredited as NCDI
(National Association of Firearm Instructors Distinguished Instructor)
1. Must have been a NAFI Expert Instructor for 5 years or
2. Distinguished Instructor credentials may be awarded by the
NAFI Board of Directors upon nomination by a board member
of an instructor who has shown a lifetime commitment to
innovation and improvement of firearm training.
a. Must have read and agree to abide by the NAFI Code of Conduct.
b. Must have made a significant contribution to shooting by, but not
limited to, firearm training, innovations, books or articles on training issues
in shooting related publications, or operation of a NAFI Certified Training Facility.
c. If Applicable, any instructor approved by another agency can have any
requirement, except the agreement to abide by NAFI Code of Conduct
and the ability to own a firearm, waived upon application to NAFI Executive
Director or board member.
d. Must be approved by at least one Board member and NAFI Executive Director
