Instructor Code of Conduct

1.   I respect my profession and deal with my fellow instructors and students with respect, dignity, fairness
and courtesy.  I exhibit respect for their opinions by refraining from rudeness or inappropriate language

2.   I take pride in the diversity of our profession and view it as an opportunity to nurture and expand my  
professional development.

3.   My professionalism is reflected in a sound working knowledge of the disciplines I teach.

4.   I continue to invest in the ongoing enhancement of my skills and abilities, and improve my competence
through continuing research and education.

5.   I provide a safe shooting and classroom environment for my fellow instructors and students, and practice
proper safety procedures, in the classroom, on the range, and whenever handling a firearm.

6.   I conduct myself and my classes with safety in mind at all times. I do not tolerate unsafe or foolish
behavior.

7.   I instill in my students a sense of responsibility and respect towards firearms and encourage them to
continue their involvement with the firearms community.

8.   I do not tolerate cheating on any academic or range activities.

9.   I strive to represent the objective truth in all firearm related matters and always act in accordance with
the law while maintaining and improving my knowledge of the current versions of state and federal laws as
they apply to me and my students.  

10. I recognize the boundaries of my competencies and the limitations of my expertise.  I provide only that
training and use only those techniques for which I am qualified by education, training, or experience.

11. I consult and cooperate with fellow members and institutions to best serve the interests of my students
and fellow instructors.

12. When I am responsible for firearm education programs, I ensure the programs provide the proper  
experiences and meet the goals for training or certification for which the program was designed.

13. I maintain all qualifications (including registration and qualification certificates) necessary for
continuing to provide firearm instruction.  

14. I am aware of cultural, individual, and role differences, including those due to age, gender, race,
ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, language, and socioeconomic status and I am committed to
maintaining a training environment free from discrimination or harassment.

15. I do not denigrate fellow members of the association or my students.

16. I ensure that my employees are of good character and adhere to this Code in the course of their
employment.

17.  I preserve the confidentiality of my students. I do not disclose, or allow to be disclosed,
information about my students without their consent, unless required by law.

18. I abstain from the possession and or use of illegal substances including alcohol before or during any
course I teach, assist with, or which I am present.

19. I conduct myself with maturity, respect and good manners at all times, and dress and act in a manner that
is not a detriment to the perception of the shooting community and this association.

20. I take all reasonable steps to maintain my own reputation and integrity and the reputation and integrity of
the National Association of Firearm Instructors.
