National Association of Firearm Instructors
What are the four nationally recognized safety rules for all firearms?
1. Always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction when you are
   not aiming at your target.

2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are aiming at your
     target.

3. Always keep your firearm unloaded/secured, until you are ready to
     use it.

4. Always know what is beyond your target so you will not endanger
    something other than your target.

What is the best gun to use for a beginner?
A small caliber firearm lessens the noise and recoil of shooting
allowing a new shooter to concentrate on the fundamentals instead of
being afraid of the next shot.  ( Examples are 22 caliber rifles and
handguns and 410, or 20 gauge shotguns.)

Why should a beginning shooter not shoot a small, lightweight firearm?
Small, lightweight guns recoil much harder than heavy guns.  Smaller
guns are more likely to hurt a beginner's hands or shoulders, thereby
making their first exposure to shooting less than enjoyable.

What type of firearm is the most reliable?  There is no "right"answer to this
question.  A firearm from a manufacturer with a reputation for quality is
probably the most reliable.  For instance, a common myth is that revolvers
are more reliable than semi auto pistols.  However, modern semi auto
pistols often can be more reliable than some less expensive revolvers. The
answer to this question is not as critical in sport shooting as it is in
defensive use of a firearm.

What are the two most important elements of shooting?   Trigger Control
and Sight Management.  Without these two, you can only hit a target with
luck, not skill.
